Tut’s Treasures


The 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb remains archaeology’s biggest moment. Found almost completely intact and packed with more than 5000 treasures, this beautifully decorated final resting place has unlocked the fascinating world of Tutankhamun and his 18th Dynasty – the most powerful kings and queens in all of Ancient Egypt. Today the treasures are insured for a staggering $650 million, but despite almost a century of investigation by the best brains in Egyptology, they still hold big secrets.

Now, the opening of a brand new high tech facility in Egypt is set to unravel the mysteries of Tutankhamun’s treasures. Beneath Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum are 19 state-of-the-art laboratories packed with revolutionary new technology: everything from reflectance transformation imaging, to atom-resolution transmission electron microscopes, to DNA sequencers, to energy dispersive X-Ray fluorescence spectrometers.

With unprecedented access to these labs and Tutankhamun’s entire treasure collection as it’s prepared for display at the museum, allowing to see hidden clues in the treasures as never before.In this 3-part series Dr Chris Naunton leads an international team of experts into the labs to unlock the hidden secrets in Tutankhamun’s treasure trove and answer the most pressing questions about this famous king: Who were his family?
