US factual broadcaster Curiosity has commissioned Blink Films for a documentary series about code breaking.
Eight-part Cracking the Code investigates the greatest codes known to humanity and the brilliant minds that deciphered them.
Curiosity commissioned the series for its SVoD service Curiosity Stream and Curiosity Channel, after production funding and distribution outfit Drive brokered a deal with the US outfit.
Alongside providing additional financing and distributing the series in selected markets, Drive has pre-sold the series to Sky History in the UK and German broadcaster Welt.
Featuring 3D graphics alongside archive and interviews with the cryptography experts, Cracking the Code (8 x 60-minutes) reveals the high-stakes stories of the race to unravel a wide range of secret codes, including world-renowned stories such as the codebreakers who changed the course of World War II, the hunt for the Zodiac Killer, the cipher-breaking heroine who took on the mob, and those who cracked the human genetic code.
Blink Films’ co-founder and creative director Dan Chambers exec produces alongside Andra Heritage, Noah Morowitz for Curiosity Studios and Drive co-managing director Ben Barrett.
“It’s always a delight to discover a new, rich seam of stories,” said Chambers. “Following the most gripping code breaking stories takes us into ancient history, science, crime and military conflict. We are very grateful to Drive and Curiosity for making this series happen.”
Barrett added: “Cracking the Code will deliver a really strong and diverse mix of stories which, by their very nature, are packed with excitement and jeopardy. This series gives a fresh approach to some great historical stories, and we look forward to taking the series out to international buyers in due course.”
