Firms well placed for quick return to profit despite halt in the market’s relentless growth
For the first time since 2015, the Broadcast Distributors Survey shows a real-time drop in revenues. With Covid-19 causing widespread disruption to both the production and marketing of content, the 2021 edition of the survey reveals a 9% decline in total sales, from £1.88bn to £1.71bn.
In the 2020 edition, there was a 5% increase, despite some companies at least partially reporting sales corresponding to the early stages of the pandemic, but this is the first time all numbers have been tallied during the era of PCR tests, shielding and red lists. This year’s figure is virtually the same as that of 2018 – underlining how the market has retracted and a period of solid growth has come to an end.
Significantly, however, this financial reversal is not accompanied by despondency among distributors – 14 of the 23 distributors surveyed this year report revenue growth (though this accumulates to less than £15m in total).
