Bin Laden: The Inside Story tracks bin Laden’s life story told by childhood friends, journalists who interviewed him, people who fought alongside him and members of Al Qaeda who once held him in high esteem. Abu Hafs, a senior Al Qaeda member, spiritual leader and friend to bin Laden, will speak on the series for the first time ever on western television. Sayed Ramen Wahdiyar, the mujhadeen warlord who trained bin Laden, also will provide his perspective for the new series.
Osama bin Laden’s own voice will also be woven throughout the series using excerpts taken from his personal collection of audio tapes which were found at his home in Kandahar. They’ll be heard for the first time in public on this series.
The series was commissioned by Sacha Mirzoeff, Channel 4 factual commissioning editor and head of Bristol Hub. Jenny Ash will direct the series, with Sanjay Singhal and Jo Abel executive producing.
“The deeper you look into the life of Osama bin Laden, the more extraordinary it seems. From the soviet invasion of Afghanistan to the war on terror, he watches as the world changes around him – until he decides to change it in return. I’m surprised by the complexity of his narrative and journey – anything but the simple story we’ve been provided to date,” Singhal said in a news release.
